WELSHMAN Jamie Lewis has been tipped for a great future despite losing to legend Phil Taylor in the PDC Darts world championship semi-finals.

Lewis caused a shock when he knocked out second seed Peter Wright, but lost to 16-time world champion Taylor in the last four.

The 26-year-old from Carmarthen, fell short in his semi-final match-up with 57-year-old Taylor losing 6-1 even though he had countless opportunities throughout the match to keep it close, if not even win the match.

Taylor said: “It was a struggle. Jamie is very steady and very accurate and doesn’t show any fear or any emotion. He was fantastic.

“He had me, I just prayed on his inexperience and at 1-1 I was thinking ‘you’re a lucky boy’, Jamie Lewis is a lovely player and a wonderful person. Never mind me retiring; he’s the one to watch. There’s no airs or graces about him.”

It was a world championship run that came from nowhere because Lewis had played below par for the majority of the year.

It turned out to be a career-changing event for the 26-year-old, moving up from 46th in the world rankings to 30th going into 2018.

Lewis will look to continue his excellent form going into 2018, and become a much more reliable and consistent player at the highest level.

With Lewis coming to the fore along with new world champion Rob Cross and Dimitri Van Den Bergh, the future of  the game looks very exciting.
