BOBBY Briers, University of South Wales’ 2nd team coach, was bitterly disappointed after his side got well beaten 4-1 on their home patch by Hartpury University 2nd.
After a promising unbeaten start to the season, the home side had to endure a shock defeat by a Hartpury side who have lost both of their opening games.
Briers said: “I think on reflection, the first half was poor as we were second to every ball, we didn’t have the bite that we’ve had the last three or four weeks which is naturally disappointing”
“Giving that second goal away just before halftime was really critical in going into the break. We knew we hadn’t played well but it was important we came into the break only one goal down so that we could address a few problems and go back out for the second half but that second goal really took the stuffing out of us.
“We didn’t really alter much because we were already down but in the second half we responded really well and I really thought we would get back into the game. We conceded the third against the run of play and despite getting back into it, conceded the fourth at a crucial time of the game but the second half definitely showed signs of promise”
Briers now looks forward to next week’s visit of University of Gloucestershire, where he is hoping to get the right response from his players.
“We need to start the game like we have in the last few weeks, bar today, I cannot fault the lads. I don’t think it is an issue, I’m just hoping that the game today was a one-off.
“We don’t need to change anything major but we will go into the game full of confidence. Teams around us have dropped points so it’s still open. We will look at addressing the problems today and make sure it doesn’t happen again next week.”
