STEVE Savage’s USW side secured a well-fought point against Hartpury University, playing most of the second half with 10 men.

The gaffer was pleased with the final outcome: “It was good, we’ve done really well, the lads stuck to the game plan against a good Hartpury side. I thought we did well with our own gameplan and in the way we set up.”

Savage said the result was important, especially as his side finished the game with nine men.

“A 0-0 is good considering we had a player sent off 5 minutes into the second half, and also a man sent off in the last 5 minutes. It was good to hold on and as we always say if you can’t win, don’t get beat.”

Savage explained the effects of going a man down, and also how his side adapted to the decision.

“Clearly it was more difficult, obviously starting with two strikers and losing one of them, so we had to tweak that a little. The lads reacted well, kept their structure and fortunately, Hartpury just couldn’t break us down.”

USW’s next game is an away trip to Swansea, next Wednesday, which Savage is looking forward to.

“We’re the only side unbeaten in the UK in the top tier so that’s a real positive. It should be a tough game away at Swansea but one we’re looking forward to.”
