A COURAGEOUS effort was shown by USW who narrowly lost to second-placed Cardiff Met in the Western 1 A League.
A brilliant line break from USW’s captain Freya Jones set up scrum-half Niamh Tinman to cross over the line for the first try of the game and give USW an early lead.
That lead was soon narrowed by a quick tap penalty from Met’s scrum-half Hannah-Mai Jones who passed to Mia Conybeare to score the try in the corner.
USW increased the lead on Cardiff Met after an amazing 70 metre solo run by Tinman who scored her second of the game.
Cardiff Met scored on the verge of halftime after numerous missed tackles by the USW defence meant that Celyn Evans ran her way through for the try.
An early yellow card for USW’s Amanda Arcangioli meant that Cardiff Met took advantage of the extra player as Emily Hird scored to take the lead for Met.
Met continued their impressive second-half performance by scoring their second of the half as substitute Bater powered her way through the USW’s defence.
A yellow card was given to Cardiff Met’s early try scorer Celyn Evans after a high tackle offence but, this didn’t affect Met as they took advantage of an overlap for Harriet Nicholas to finish off the move beautifully for the try.
USW got their first try of the half through a quick tap penalty from Georgia Evans who beat her player to score but, Cardiff Met took a quick tap penalty of their own as Claudia Meyrick secured the points.
There was a dramatic end to the game as Freya Jones broke the line once again to give an opportunity for Jordan Hopkins to score as a late comeback was on.
In the dying minutes an excellent offload by Hopkins to Emily Pratt saw her use her speed to finish off the try in the corner but, this wasn’t enough to give USW the win.
