CARDIFF BLUES head coach John Mulvihill lamented individual errors following his side’s defeat to Edinburgh at Cardiff Arms Park.
The capital region were unable to build on their victory over Southern Kings in South Africa, with Edinburgh defeating the Blues 19-11.
Owen Lane gave them their only exciting moment of the match with Blues’ first and only try.
The Blues conceded a total of eleven penalties with nine coming in the first-half and were punished by the kicking of Jaco van der Walt, who missed all but once.
“I thought we were poor individually and defensively tonight,” admitted Mulvihill.
“We didn’t consistently mount pressure on the opposition.
“We’ll probably look at that later in the weekend, when the emotion comes out of it, and see that we did alright. But there were some basic errors on both sides of the ball that we just can’t have.”
“We just didn’t mount phase after phase after the attack and that’s what we’re pretty good at.
Preparations for the game were affected as the Blues were only able to train once all week after arriving back from their trip from Port Elizabeth last week.
Next up for the Blues is the Glasgow Warriors, who were defeated by the Scarlets last night, as the Blues sit fourth in Group B.
“We just ran out of spark tonight. We got back late from Africa, on Monday we didn’t train and on Tuesday was a clarity day. We only had one session to get sorted.
“We’ve got a big trip out of the way and we’ll have full training next week.”
The Blues’ were only able to train once all week after arriving back from their trip from Port Elizabeth last week.
Mulvihill believes the Blues can turn it around: “We’ve got to trust them and put faith in them to turn it around and they will as they’re quite hard on themselves. I’m sure we’ll bounce back next week.”
