UNIVERSITY of South Wales Men’s 6th went down to a 2-0 home defeat at the hands of University of Gloucestershire.
Goals from Jack Charman and Elliot Wright meant USW went a second week without a win, after their 1-1 draw away at University of Exeter last time out.
A goalless first-half meant it was all to play for after the break, but USW were unable to make the breakthrough and succumbed to Gloucestershire’s superior finishing.
The hosts started brightly, and had the first attack of the match which was quickly turned on its head after alert defending by Gloucestershire. This led to a counter attack which saw the impressive Charman shot wide.
USW had another chance shortly after when Michal Bulenda put in a cross which was met by Ryan Fry, whose shot was comfortably dealt with by Jacob Fairweather in the Gloucestershire goal.
The Treforest side were soon on the attack once more as Bulenda went charging down the wing, and then towards goal, but he was unable to prevent the ball from going out for a goal-kick.
Charman was involved once more, and went close just before the break when he saw his effort tipped over the bar by USW keeper Lloyd Turner.
The game was in desperate need of a spark, and Charman – a constant threat throughout – was on hand to provide it when his inch-perfect free-kick found the bottom right corner to put the visitors ahead.
The goal provided Gloucestershire with added belief, and they were able to double their advantage when a good save by Turner rebounded to Wright, who drilled in the rebound.
They came close again with 15 minutes left to play when a free-kick was pushed over the bar, preventing the score-line from getting any worse from USW’s point of view.
USW will be hoping it’s a case of third time lucky when they travel to face Cardiff Men’s 7th (Medics) on October 30.
