Preview: USW Women 2nd v Cardiff Women 7th

by Matthew Williams

AS a new season is upon us, USW will be raring to go as they welcome the visit of crosstown rivals Cardiff Women 7th.

With both sides perhaps expected to struggle to mount serious title challenges in ever improving leagues, the cup competition
could represent a real chance for either side to get their hands on silverware this season.

Another added incentive for both sides no doubt, will be the prospect of a local derby. In the hope of progressing through, the two Cardiff region universities going head to head in this early season encounter.

USW will be feeling confident ahead of today’s game, following on from last seasons 5th place finish. After accumulating nine points last season, USW did enough to finish as the best of the rest.

Royal Agricultural 2nds’ tally of one point being a far cry from challenging USW for the top five spot last season. USW top four bid was agonisingly just short, as they finished just one point behind fourth place Winchester 2nds.

USW’s opponents Cardiff 7ths on the other hand, endured what turned out to be a rather dismal season last year. The visitors’ end of season tally came four points after ten games, with just one win all season. Cardiff 7’s finished last season with a goal difference of -26, and ended their campaign bottom on goal difference.

However, as both sides know, this is a new season and a different competition. Both sides will be fancying their chances in this big clash, and the winners will know that their confidence will only increase the more they keep winning.

The hosts and their visiting counterparts both have some new players, and both have the belief that this year could be their year.
