UNIVERSITY of South Wales 4th suffered a heavy defeat to Bournemouth 1st but did show promise in attack that should serve them well in future games.
The first quarter of this encounter was dominated by the visitors who combined good ball movement in attack with a resolute and well organised defence.
But USW didn’t succumb completely and by the end of the first quarter had taken advantage of some clever counter-attacking moves to trail 17-4.
USW made a bright start to the second quarter by holding Bournemouth off well in defence, but they couldn’t maintain it and by the end of the second quarter the prolific Bournemouth shooter Sinead Sheehey had helped her side into a 37-8 lead.
The home side did look quite threatening in attack, but they couldn’t translate it onto the scoreboard and by the end of the third quarter were in arrears to the tune of 45-9.
To their credit USW never threw in the towel against a clearly superior side and kept their effort levels up until the very end.
It is this, and the threat they did carry going forward, that should sustain them even in the wake of such a poor looking final score.
