USW women’s lacrosse captain Hannah Westhenry criticised the ‘controversial’ decision to chalk off one of her team’s goals during a 6-6 thriller against Cardiff University.
The home side’s first strike was mystifyingly ruled out a full 20 minutes after it had been given, leading to some heated debate.
It remains unclear precisely why this was the case, but Westhenry said it was disruptive to the rhythm of the team.
“It was a controversial game in the end. I think that having our first goal taken off us three fourths into the game wasn’t ideal because it affects how you approach the game,” she said.
Overall though Westhenbry was pleased with the way her team played and seemed confident going into the next fixture – also against Cardiff.
“We are playing them again and that should be another close one,” she added.
“They are a good team to play against and I think next time we might beat them.
“I think we definitely put up a fight. There were a few knocks and injuries towards the end but the girls powered on through.”
