HOLLYWOOD actor Matthew McConaughey praised Welsh darts player Gerwyn Price after his Grand Slam of Darts victory at the weekend.

The Hollywood A lister starred in movies such as; Dazed and Confused, Wolf of Wall Street and Dallas Buyers Club, for which he won an Academy Award for Best Actor.

And, it seems that the Cardiff born 34 year old’s performance in Aldersley, Wolverhampton caused quite a stir in the world of acting.

The Welshman became only the seventh player in history to retain a major PDC Darts and moved up the darts rankings to third in the world, which is a career best for Price.  He defeated world number one Michael Van Gerwen, before defeating world number seven Peter Wright 16-6 to retain his title.

“The Iceman” earned £125,000 for winning the tournament as well as £3,500 bonus money alongside the Eric Bristow Trophy and he has earned further plaudits from across the world for his triumph, with McConaughey offering the unlikeliest of praise.

McConaughey tweeted: “Big ups to the Iceman @Gezzyprice for taking out MVG (Michael Van Gerwen) and the Eagle to win his second consecutive GSD.”

Price won the tournament last year, controversially defeating Gary Anderson in the final, a victory that saw him become the first Welsh player to win a PDC major. He picked up £110,000 in prize money for winning that tournament as well as £2,500 bonus money for topping his group.

The Texan’s shout out came on the same day that it was announced that the PDC’s World Series, which has been held in Las Vegas over the last three years, will now be at Madison Square Garden in New York City in June next year.
