WALES’ top goal scorer and Watford Ladies captain, Helen Ward, joins the Sports Journalism teaching team.
Off the field, she returned to education as a mature student and graduated with a first class honours. On it, she has scored 42 goals in 70 games for Wales and 11 in 12 for Watford this season.
The Professional Sports Writing and Journalism graduate is her club’s marketing officer and joins in a part-time capacity to deliver on a variety of modules across the degree.
Course leader Julie Kissick said Ward’s arrival was something everyone was excited about.
“It isn’t every day students get to be taught by their heroes and Helen has certainly had a huge impact on many of them.
“We’ve been fortunate to have seen Helen play, have her attend a conference we organised last year and some of the students have been able to interview her at various times since the course started almost three years ago.
“She has always been more than generous with her time and now she will be sharing her expertise with our students, who are all looking for a career in the media.
“It is a huge coup for us as a course to have someone of Helen’s calibre on board.
“We’ve had some staff changes on the course and Helen is our star loan signing until the end of the academic year. We managed to get her in just before the transfer window closes!”
Ward will be delivering seminars on marketing and journalism as well as working with the final year students on preparing for life after university.
“I am honoured to be welcomed to University of South Wales and to be working with such a great group of students,” she said.
“It is something I haven’t done before and I am looking forward to stepping outside my comfort zone a little and challenging myself.”
