AGROUP of second year sports journalism students have been excelling with their weekly podcast titled, Welsh Premiership Podcast.
Students Haydn Evans, Tobias Hunt and Adam Clearly are making a name for themselves within Welsh rugby. Their podcasts feature high profile guests from the Welsh domestic game and their weekly episodes have gained a large following. On social media they especially have a large following, having gained over 1000 followers on their Twitter account.
During the Coronavirus lockdown the group of boys were not able to record their podcast in the usual way. But they were able to improvise by starting to do video podcasts on the Welsh Premiership Podcast YouTube channel. On their channel the boys have had videos reaching the high hundreds in the number of views they get. You can check out their YouTube channel by clicking here.
Guests are a vital part of a podcasts credibility and the boys have done extremely well in getting guests every week for their podcast. Some of the guests they have had on their podcast include Cardiff Blues’, Josh Turnbull and ex Wales player Ceri Sweeney.
The Welsh domestic game is a niche area and the boys have filled a void in its coverage, becoming a hub for supporters to go to for their fix of Welsh Premiership content.
One of the presenter for the podcast Haydn Evans (Twitter: https://twitter.com/haydnevanssport )is looking proud about how well the podcast has done so far and is looking forward to seeing how they will progress in the future.
“It’s probably taken off better than we imagined really, we’ve already got a decent following on twitter and on our YouTube channel so it’s going great. We’re all interested in welsh rugby and there wasn’t much out there on the premiership so we decided to give it a crack and we’ve already had some great guests from former professionals like Ceri Sweeney to the lesser known names like Richard Brooks etc who are Premiership legends.
Our main aim is to keep content coming out for the fans of the Welsh Premiership, the clubs are the traditional clubs of Welsh rugby and have big followings and there’s loads of interesting stories and characters from the league so we just want to share these stories with as many people as we can and hopefully raise the profile of the league too.”
Co-presenter, Tobias Hunt (Twitter: https://twitter.com/tobias_hunt01) is also looking forward to seeing how far the podcast can progress and is also pleased about how well the podcast has been doing so far.
“I think Podcast has gone really well so far. We choose a niche market in the Welsh Premiership but we all had a keen interest in it. I feel like it’s been very successful so far and we want it to keep growing when the Rugby does restart.
We’ve had some big names on already, the likes of Josh Turnbull, Aled Thomas and Billy McBryde. We’ve also had some club veterans in the likes of Richard Brooks and Jonny Lewis. But the biggest name we’ve had on is former Welsh international Ceri Sweeney who was great.
We also have another really interesting episode lined up with journalist and broadcaster Phil Steele. Our plan is to just keep producing as much content as we can for the league. We just want to grow and give the league the credit it deserves. We like listening to people’s opinions on who they would like to see on the pod and we will try and get as many of those guests on as we can.”
The third Welsh Premiership Podcast presenter, Adam Cleary (Twitter: https://twitter.com/AdamCleary7) has said the podcast has provided him with invaluable industry skills.
“It’s been great participating in the podcast and it being well received on social media. It’s been good to give the Welsh Premiership some much needed coverage too. I think the skills I’ve gained would be that I’m a lot more confident interviewing people now, and it’s been good working together as a team with the other boys trying to make the podcast a success.”
