FROM Bangor in North Wales, this week’s ‘Fresher of the Week’ is Lewis Sharpe.
Lewis has loved studying sports journalism at the University of South Wales since September in Cardiff.
He has taken numerous opportunities that have came his way in the last few months.
“I’ve really enjoyed the course so far. I’m fortunate that I’ve been covering games on the weekend, so the theory I’ve learned on the course has helped massively with that”, he said.
“I’ve also enjoyed the photography module because it’s something I’ve never experienced before. I’ve loved the practical sessions – writing match reports, previews etc.
“I’ve been writing for Y Clwb Pêl-Droed for about a year now and I’ve been really fortunate to cover Cymru Premier games, Welsh Premier Women’s League games and Wales’ men and women games at Cardiff City Stadium and Rodney Parade.
“I’ve also, more recently, been writing for a website called St David’s World.”
As mentioned, Lewis isn’t from Cardiff, but he hopes moving to the capital will give him a good chance of securing a job in sports journalism.
“I hope moving down here will give me a lot more opportunities in terms of different teams and different sports to cover.
“I was studying English, Welsh, Business and PE in sixth form so I hope being bilingual will give me more opportunities to cover games in both languages.
“In terms of hobbies, I play football for my local side, which was difficult in the last season because it often clashed with the hours I was asked to write for Y Clwb Pêl-Droed, so I had to try and find a compromise.
“In the future, I hope to get a job that I enjoy in the industry, preferably surrounding football.”
