Government Funding Package May Not Guarantee Security Just Yet

MONDAY saw the Welsh government announce a plan to invest £17.7m into several sports across the country, to help spectator sports stay afloat during the absence of fans.

The funding fees will be provided to governing bodies of each sport, which includes rugby, football, cricket, ice Hockey, horse racing, and netball.

Despite this progressive news, there remains a wide concern that more funding may yet be needed in order to ensure sport returns next season.

This is due to the everchanging circumstances surrounding the pandemic and its impact on spectator sports, with the prospect of fans returning to live sporting venues still appearing no closer.

Ice hockey will receive £200,000 of the near £18m package, with Welsh clubs such as the Cardiff Devils being direct beneficiaries.

With no fans being present at live Devils games for a significant amount of time, the package fee could help the club balance their books and stay afloat, something which may not have been possible without the government’s help.

Cardiff Devils Managing Director Todd Kelman declined to comment.
