SINCE graduating in 2020, Tom Young has gone onto landing a senior role at VAVEL and has reported from the likes of the Etihad and Wembley Stadium.
Throughout his time studying Sports Journalism at USW, Tom learnt essential journalistic skills that has allowed him to report at some of the biggest and best stadiums in the country.
The Manchester City fanatic contributed for VAVEL during his time as a student, and has seen his role upgrade since graduating.
The graduate is also the rugby league editor and controls all of that sport’s content for the publication.
And with this experience, Tom plans on landing himself a full-time job in the industry in the near future.
“I took up a role with VAVEL during my time at USW, but since leaving I have worked my way into a more senior role with the site.” Tom said.
“I currently work as the Rugby League editor and the Manchester City editor, which means I am in charge of all the content that goes out for those two sections of the site.
“My roles at the site have entitled me to accreditation rights for the Premier League and the Football League, which has been very rewarding, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I have covered City at numerous grounds throughout the season, including at Turf Moor and Goodison Park, whilst I was also lucky enough to attend Wembley Stadium for the Papa John’s Trophy Final between Salford City and Portsmouth.”
By studying Sports Journalism at USW, the journalistic skills that were developed have been vital in landing his role as editor.
“The course helped me to develop my writing skills massively,” Tom continued.
“Whilst the days spent copy editing work at the Sport Park has come in tremendously handy when critiquing my writers work, the long-term aim is to get into a full-time job in the industry.
“But for now, I’m happy working for the different publications I write for.
We’ll just have to see how it goes!”
