A mixed bag of results for Welsh EFL sides as the season end draws ever nearer

For the three Welsh sides in the EFL, we saw a return to form, a fall out of form and one season all but definitely come to an end.

Newport’s return to form

Newport County was the side out of the three who came away having the best result after a 2-0 win at home against Crawley Town. The game was very much decided in the second half. A goal from Liam Shephard in the 57th minute got things off to a good start for the Amber Army. Then a late red card helped Newport to consolidate their fate in the game with a goal in the 10th minute of added time from Aaron Lewis much to the fans’ delight.

On Saturday Newport will be away to Exeter in an all-important game as Exeter sit one place behind them in eighth with Newport holding that all-important seventh-place spot that keeps them in playoff contention. A game in which neither side can afford to lose.

Swansea holding on to third

Swansea did not fare as well as they lost at home 1-0 to QPR. Not much has gone the Swans’ way as of late after coming back to draw against Wycombe at the weekend to make it no win in their last two. Something they will look to change to try and keep the best playoff spot possible as they currently sit in third with nerves starting to come to fruition.

On Sunday Swansea travel east to play Reading. A game, like Newports, that will have drastic implications on the playoffs as Reading sit outside in seventh with Swansea having not quite confirmed a playoff birth yet this season. A game which they cannot afford to come away without a point.

Cardiff’s season all but over

Cardiff had a slightly better performance but the result has meant that the playoffs are now without a doubt out of reach for the Blues. A 1-1 draw away to Brentford is not a terrible performance thanks to a Kiefer Moore penalty that kept them in the game.

The next game for Cardiff will be at home against the bottom of the league Wycombe. With playoffs unable to take place this year for the Blues, a strong finish to build up momentum for the next season is all they can focus on now.
