SWANSEA City defender Tija Richardson has spoken about the competitiveness of the Welsh Women’s Premier League this season ahead of her sides huge game against Cardiff Metropolitan tonight.

The Swans travel to Cyncoed Campus to face the Archers who currently find themselves top of the table. The visitors currently find themselves in second place and know a win could go a long way in sealing their second consecutive league title.

Swans defender Tija Richardson was impressed with her side’s campaign this season and believes the competitiveness of the league has improved this season, particularly post lockdown.

“Since coming back from lockdown I think the league has become much more competitive. Every team in the league is fighting for positions, which makes every game far more competitive.

We have played some really good football this season as a team and have scored some really nice goals, too. The football we are playing is being shown in our results.”

Swansea are currently level on points with tonight’s opposition, albeit with a game in hand. A win would take them three points clear and with the game in hand to come it would put the Swans in a great position to become back to back champions.

Since the Welsh Premier Women’s League was founded in 2009, Swansea have been champions on four occasions and will be looking to win back to back titles for the first time since 2011. Richardson is hoping that her side can continue their form which has seen them go unbeaten this season.

“This season has been going really well for us. We concentrate on each game that comes along and that’s been the main focus since we started. After a game we re-group and prepare for the next game.

My hope for this season is to just keep playing well and keep chipping away at each game. We don’t need to add any pressure to ourselves we just need to enjoy our football together as a team and hopefully the results will follow.”

Tonight’s game kicks off at 7:30pm and can be watched live on Sgorio via Facebook and YouTube.
