The end of the course just weeks away for the third-year students, we spoke to James Dodd about his time on the course.

James thought back to the important lessons he learnt from the first year of the course.

“The first year was important as we were given the chance to learn the skills of journalism quickly and practically, working at the Sport Park every week gave us plenty of opportunities to gain journalistic experience, such as doing regular match reports and interviews with the USW sport teams”.

James spoke about how COVID has affected the second and third years of the course.

“it has made things a lot more difficult, it’s been had to stay motivated on work when you’re unable to leave the house, but it has also taught everyone how to be a bit more adaptable around work.”

He then highlighted the experiences that he has been able to get during this course.

“The course has given me so many great opportunities such as interviewing former Rugby Union players Sean Fitzpatrick and Michael Lynagh, but also brought me working experiences such as working with Dai Sports and getting the opportunity to work in the professional rugby conferences.

James looks ahead to his future after the course.

“the course has taught me many lessons of journalism and given me needed experience working in the industry and I would like to take what I’ve learnt on the course into getting a job in the industry.”
