THE University of South Wales (USW) 6th XI endured a difficult afternoon at the Sport Park, falling to an emphatic 7-0 defeat against their opponents from Devon and Cornwall.

Falmouth and Exeter (FXU) started strongly with pressure from early corners and Amrik Glover cutting inside dangerously from the right wing.

Some good build up play and possession led to Ted MacDonnell opening the scoring for FXU after 11 minutes, when he managed to fire a shot under the USW keeper Henry Sheppard’s right hand.

FXU were well on top and would have gone further ahead earlier had it not been for some fine saves by Sheppard.

In the 25th minute, USW, still without an attempt on goal, were put under more pressure when an outrageous 40-yard attempt from FXU centre back Ethan Hall was tipped over the bar.

From the resulting corner, a dangerous cross from FXU captain Josh Blackwood found Joseph Nash in the box, who headed home for 2-0.

Shortly after the half hour mark, a well struck corner from Blackwood found the arm of USW’s Zak Hughes and the ref had no choice but to award the penalty. Blackwood took it in his stride to make it 3-0 to the visitors at half-time.

USW made an encouraging start to the second half when John Dowse headed just over the FXU bar from a corner by Jack Clarke.

USW kept the pressure on with a ball over the top and as Falmouth’s keeper came rushing out a mix-up with his centre-half caused him to miss the ball, but Clarke’s shot was blocked by defender Harrison Parmley saving a certain goal.

After a good first 10 minutes by USW, FXU grew back into the game and starting to dominate possession again.

And it was one-way traffic from then on, with four further FXU goals completing the rout
