WALES women coach Gemma Grainger insists her squad is developing the type of mentality that will enable them to compete with the best at international level.

Grainger reflected on the bigger picture after watching her side thrash Estonia 4-0 at Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday night.

It means Wales now have 10 points from their opening four matches are well placed to qualify for the World Cup from Group I.

The added positive was the record breaking crowd this week, of more than 5,500.

Grainger said: “There was so much in terms of tonight’s performance.

“Firstly, the crowd. To be at home and have a crowd like that it just makes us stronger, it makes us prouder and we know why we do what we do.

“Looking at the overall performance, with the stats and the possession, we’re turning into a really clinical team with the ball and we’re making sure that behind the ball we’re hard to beat.

“Some of the work that took place to win the ball back in their half was outstanding and it stopped any kind of problems forming. We want to make sure we keep building on that.”

The squad depth was a point made clear as the game saw a mixture of very experienced players and also those making their debuts.

“The squad depth is pleasing, we spoke in the changing rooms about the senior players, the younger players everybody stepping up,” Grainger added.

“We have players that are constantly pushing the boundaries for everybody and if we want to be a team that qualifies and competes, that’s the kind of mentality and environment we want to continue to create.”

Greece are next up for Wales in Llanelli on November 26 as they continue their quest to reach the World Cup finals of 2023.
