THERE was never a day like it – at least not for the BA Sports Journalism course at USW.
The first set of students to graduate, in 2020, along with those who followed them a year later, finally had their achievements properly recognised at a graduation ceremony at Celtic Manor’s International Convention Centre on Wednesday.
With the sports journalism degree having begun in 2017, it was the first time anyone who had completed the course had been able to bask in the glory alongside academics, peers and proud family members, after two years of Covid disruption.
Callum Ellis, one of the class of 2020, who now works in the media department of the Football Association of Wales said: “It’s a brilliant day, great to get together and reflect on our time doing the course and to celebrate graduating.

“Obviously we were disappointed not to be able to do it at the time, and it feels like a long wait since, but it’s been worth it.
“It’s good to be recognised and experience a day like this. It’s been memorable.”
Dylan James was among the 2021 graduates to attend. Dylan, who now works as a video sports journalist for WalesOnline, said: “It’s been a proud day and I want to thank the lecturers and say a big well done to everyone.
“Seeing everyone again has been amazing, it’s just been such a special day.”
Course founder Julie Kissick and course leader Delme Parfitt both watched on proudly as the graduates doffed their hats and soaked up their moment in the limelight.
“I remember how disappointing it was when the pandemic hit and we weren’t able to have these events,” said Delme.
“But I’d just like to say a huge well done to everybody. They can be proud of the hard work they put in and both me and Julie wish them all the success and happiness in the world.”
