THE University of South Wales Football 2nd’s secured an impressive 5-0 derby victory over the Men’s 3rd’s at the Sport Park.
A superb hat-trick from Corey McKeary, along with strikes from Cameron Smith and Max Wells, saw Rob Bailey’s side secure three points on the opening day of the Aldi Western Tier 3 League season.
The 2nds began the game on the front foot with McKeary becoming the main target man for the home side, as they searched for an early goal.
Immediately at the other end, the 3rds were looking to stake their own claim, and a great block from skipper Tito Anderson prevented a fierce strike from Parway Ismail from threatening a goal.
Ismail went close again for the away side just moments later, with the forward unable to guide an effort goalward after another clever run behind.
Midway through the first-half, the 2nds took the lead through McKeary, who was on hand to head home at the back post and ensure his side went in at the break leading 1-0.
The 3rds fashioned the initial threat when the game resumed with Ismail again forcing Tucker into a strong diving save.
However, just three minutes later, the 2nds doubled their lead, as Kai Harris found McKeary at the back post to claim his second.
In the 51st minute, McKeary grabbed his hat-trick with a terrific finish from the outside of his foot, curling a sumptuous effort beyond the goalkeeper.
Going into the last 15 minutes, Bailey’s side were awarded a penalty. From the spot, Smith found the roof of the net, although the ‘keeper got a hand on it.
Substitute Wells chalked up USW’s fifth with just five minutes remaining after he found the back of the net from close range.
