USW 5ths failed to capitalise on multiple first half opportunities to head top of the Western Tier 6 B in a 2-1 defeat to University of Wales Trinity St. David’s in a cagey affair.
Two second half goals from Ross Jones sealed a victory despite a late consolation from USW captain Tom Smith.
The defeat means USW 5ths will end the year in second place in the league table.
The first opportunity came in the 10th minute where USW captain Smith fired a shot well wide of the goal.
USW continued to apply pressure with Gyo Kimura shooting from long range which St. David’s goalkeeper Rhys Mansell saved well.
Winger Joseph Anaisie hit the crossbar before Teifi Jones put the visiting goalkeeper to the test as he made a crucial save.
St. David’s created their first opportunity of the afternoon after an error from home goalkeeper Ellis Buckley. Striker Jones got his shot cleared off the line by Henry Shephard.
The away side had a penalty claim on the stroke of halftime which was waved away by the referee who give a yellow card to Ifan Sion Mason-Evans.
The opening goal came just before the hour mark with Jones catching the USW defence off guard with a bursting counter attack to give them the lead.
USW tried to get back into the game as Kimura had a curving effort from the free kick which flew just wide.
Jones doubled his tally to extend the lead with a brilliant volley following a terrific piece of skill to flick the ball over the defence.
USW did manage to get a response a few minutes from time with captain Smith heading home after a swinging cross from Ben Heathcote to restore faith for the home side.
Unfortunately for the hosts, they failed to find an equaliser as they remain in second place ahead of the New Year.
