USW 3rds slipped to a disappointing 3-1 defeat at the Sport Park after a brace from visitors’ striker James Burgess.

Burgess’ first goal didn’t arrive until early in the second half, his spectacular shot catching USW goalkeeper Freddie Owers off his line to break the deadlock.

This came after Cardiff were disallowed a goal just before half time when Burgess was adjudged to have fouled Owers in the process of tapping the ball into the net.

The game began with very minimal chances for both sides throughout the opening 20 minutes.

The best opportunity came the way of Cardiff and centre back Jamie Rogers, his header from a corner cleared off on the line by USW’s Kieran Stapleton.

Less than five minutes after Cardiff’s opener, USW found an equaliser through Finn James when his curling ball into the box was misjudged by goalkeeper Jake Steven and found its way into the top corner.

After 70 minutes, Cardiff regained the lead.

A lack of communication between Owers and Oscar Haines allowed George Thomas to capitalise on a bouncing ball and head home.

Just five minutes later Cardiff made the game safe with a third.

The ball was sent across the box to Dom Jenks at the back post, who finished neatly from a tight angle.

Cardiff were able to see the match out with ease, with USW unable to threaten during the final 15 minutes.

USW 3rds play Bristol 5ths next and desperately need to find their first win of the league campaign.
