Lacrosse vice-captain appeals for more players as USW endure tough start to season

USW vice-captain Amber Maddox-Moore admitted that the squad are in need of “fresh legs” after a comprehensive 23-2 defeat to UWE’s 1st side.

In a dominant display, the visitors wracked up 15 goals in the first-half alone as the quality of UWE shone through, with only a consolatory double from Moore for the hosts.

Maddox-Moore said: “At the start (of the season), we had a team mainly of freshers, so everybody was getting used to the sport.

“However, I feel like we’ve built upon our defence, we’re getting there stronger, and we lack subs.

“Fresh legs is something that we struggle with, there are a lot of injuries, so everybody has to play their full game.

“The teams that we’ve gone against have had many subs that they can roll on and off. So, I think encouraging more people to actually play the game would help us in the future.”

Although there was a clear gulf in class between the sides, Maddox-Moore still believes there were some positive aspects to the performance.

“We came into the game knowing it was a cup game, so it wasn’t something that was a priority for us, we’re trying to focus on the BUCS League, and trying to get experience from other teams,” she said.

“We took our defence and attack to a different perspective this week. We focused a lot more on the play, calming down the play, and slowing the game down so it was on our terms.”

The game was eventually abandoned with two minutes remaining after Jess Kilgariff was caught high by a rogue stick.

Speaking of the injury, the vice captain stated: “Jess is fine, she’s just suffered a nosebleed from the cut to the top of her nose.

“She’s alright, no broken bones.”
