USW Women 1sts fell to cup defeat against UWE 1sts 23-2 in a match that was abandoned with two minutes to go, due to a nasty injury to USW attacker Jess Kilgariff.
Kilgariff collided with an opposing player and was left with a nosebleed, prompting the referee to blow the final whistle early.
The unfortunate incident had no effect on the outcome, however, with UWE having been dominant from the off.
Consolation goals for USW came courtesy of defender Amber Maddox-Moore, with her influence giving USW a lifeline in the game.
From the face-off, UWE applied all the pressure and with a minute gone, attacker Illiana Sherry made it 1-0 to the visitors. The second came straight away with Cassie Sherry making it 2-0.
USW goalkeeper Nienke Ten Berge had a busy afternoon denying Eva Marsh, though by the sixth minute mark, UWE were stretching away as Verity Zisser scored two, and Flo Johnson grabbed a third to make it 5-0.
By the end of the opening quarter, UWE had added another four through Zisser and Johnson.
The second quarter saw UWE add to their lead through Eden Reynolds but the hosts then claimed their first goal via a penalty from Maddox-Moore.
Three goals in three minutes for UWE from Johnson and Tara Nelson took the visitors’ tally to 13 and by the end of the third quarter it was 21-1.
Maddox-Moore found the net to make it hers 22-2 and USW managed to stem the flow of goals in the final quarter, with UWE’s captain Holly Brewerton rounding off the scoring.
