A Rosie Baker goal gave Cardiff Met 3rds victory over USW 1sts at Met’s Cyncoed campus.
Baker struck in the second minute following a goal-line scramble after a penalty corner.
Throughout the 70 minutes Met’s attack pinned USW back, giving them little opportunity to fight their way into the game.
At the start of the second half USW forward Millie Edleston squandered a one-on-one scenario, Met goaltender Lauren Price making the save.
But Met might have won more convincingly – an effort late in the second half by home captain Tabitha Gallen struck the woodwork after a neat move saw her round USW goaltender Bethan Havard.
Baker also blundered her opportunity for a second of the match in the 61st minute with an open goal miss following a well worked play through the attacking third.
USW defenders Ella Morgan and Katie Underwood ensured their side kept a foothold in the match with strong blocks and anticipated tackles in their penalty area, but there was little joy for the visitors in the middle and attacking thirds.
Cardiff Met managed to keep momentum with quick attacking moves forcing their opponents to give up multiple penalty corners.
Despite a tough afternoon, USW displayed ample team spirit and defensive determination which bodes well for the rest of the season.
