USW men’s football 4ths manager Josh Richardson claimed the 5ths “wanted it more” despite his side securing a dominant 6-0 victory.
A brace from Freddie Holloway plus goals from Aidan Jones, Toby Sutton, James McClaren, and a 5th’s own goal, secured a comfortable win for the 4ths.
However, Richardson wasn’t entirely satisfied with his team’s performance, suggesting that, despite the heavy defeat, the 5ths showed more desire.
“If I’m being brutally honest, it could have been more,” the manager said post-match. “That’s not the best we can play, and I’ll be worried if we perform like that in future games.
“But we got the job done, and that’s what matters.”
He added: “To be fair to the 5ths team, I think they wanted it more today. But luckily, our quality was too good.”
Holloway, who was instrumental in the victory with two goals, saw his day end on a controversial note when he was shown a red card following a dispute with the referee.
Richardson commented: “Mixed opinions on Fred today… we told him to stay between the sticks, he did that, he got two goals. Shame about the red card.”
Despite the sending-off, Richardson had high praise for the striker’s ability: “He’s going to score a lot of goals this season.”
Reflecting on the match overall, he added: “They could have spoken a lot more. I think you can improve 10% of your game just by speaking, and they didn’t speak.”
USW 4th’s will be looking to build as they face Gloucester 4ths in their next game.
Meanwhile, the USW 5ths hope to bounce back from their defeat when they take on Gloucester 3rds at the Sport Park.
