Despite a quiet deadline day for Wrexham, it’s been a productive window for The Red Dragons as they’ve bolstered their squad ahead of yet another promotion push.
The North Wales club broke their transfer record to sign 26-year-old Sam Smith from League One rivals Reading for £2.40million before adding former England international Jay Rodriguez on a free transfer from Championship outfit Burnley.
Phil Parkinson’s side also added Hull City winger Ryan Longman on loan for the remainder of the season, with him having an instant impact assisting on his debut during their late 2-1 away win to Crawley Town on Saturday.
“Overall, it’s been quite a productive window for Wrexham. They’ve brought in Jay Rodriguez an ex-Premier League player, plenty of experience, plenty of goals in him,” said Wrexham fan Hannah Gwenllian.
“Bringing in Longman from Hull, an instant impact over the weekend getting an assist for Elliot Lee’s 95th minute winner versus Crawley, which is quite promising, Sam Smith from Reading, he’s mid-twenties, not got to his prime yet so that’s promising,” she added.
“One complaint there has been from Wrexham fans is basically a lack of goals at the minute, Paul Mullin has had two very bad injuries in the last two preseasons and hasn’t really got going until after Christmas.
“It’s been quite important that we’ve been managed to sign Sam Smith and Jay Rodriguez who will hopefully be able to provide goals we’ve been lacking.”
Wrexham currently sit third in the League One table, four points behind Wycombe Wanderers in the automatic promotion spots. Despite it being their first season back in the third-tier, fans are already dreaming of a spot in The Championship.
“This squad now, unbelievably, we could be building for The Championship which is mad to think about really,” said Hannah.
“Are those players now any good, you point the finger at Ollie Palmer, Steve Fletcher, Matty James, they’re players now in their thirties and by bringing in Longman and Smith especially we’re bringing in younger players who got legs on them and know where the goal is.
“It’s a very good window for Wrexham, personally I don’t think we should be looking that far ahead thinking of going to The Championship at this moment in time, I think we should be consolidating ourselves in League One.
“I’d have snapped your hand off at the start of the season for a play-off place.”
Wrexham will look to continue their promotion push on February 15th as they travel to strugglers Northampton Town.
