Cardiff Devils head coach Pete Russell said his players showed their experience in not panicking during their 1-0 overtime win against Nottingham Panthers.

The home side had the better of the encounter but could find a breakthrough until Cole Sanford scored in the 61st minute.

Russell said he was pleased with the effort levels from his team, and said it was a night when they had to stick to their task.

He said: “We created a lot of offence, and the biggest thing is that we stayed patient.

“We never got stressed when we couldn’t score because we had so many chances.

“I think it shows what we’ve been missing, with getting four blocks back. It makes a difference to the hockey team.”

Meanwhile Panthers coach Danny Stewart admitted his team didn’t do enough in what was their 14th game in just 30 days.

He said: “I thought the first period we came really good and played very good.

“We had some quality chances, and I think we just emptied the tank.”

“Cardiff upped their physicality and pace, and we didn’t match it for the last couple of periods.

“But I can’t be more proud of my guys.”
