A STUDENT from Neyland in west Wales has been named Best Sports Journalist, 2018, at the University of South Wales Sport Recognition Awards.

Tom Pritchard, 20, is one of the first cohort of Sports Journalism students at USW’s Atrium campus.

He has a keen interest in rugby, football and cricket and has reported on USW’s Men’s Rugby 1st this season, along with fellow shortlisted nominee, Nathan Parker from Pontypridd.

Jordan Jones, from Cardiff was also shortlisted. He runs Y Clwb Pel-Droed and primarily reported on the Women’s 1st Netball side this season.

The evening was hosted by BBC Wales football correspondent Rob Phillips.

Sports Journalism course leader Julie Kissick said: “I’m delighted for Tom. He’s a talented writer and has proved to be a conscientious student.

“To win an award at this stage in his career is very special and he should be proud of the achievement, as should Nathan and Jordan on being shortlisted.

“The three of them have work exceptionally well in covering their teams and they have started to develop some good contacts with our colleagues at USW Sport and beyond.

“Sports journalism is a highly competitive field to work in, but I’m sure if they stay focused and continue with the work ethic they have shown in their first year, they will all go on to make their mark in it.”
