USW 6ths overcame USW 5ths in a tightly contested cup match.
Pre-match nerves saw a scrappy opening between the two sides from USW.
The deadlock was broken when the 5ths gave away one foul too many with striker Dan Damilola was tripped inside the penalty area, giving the ref no other choice but send it to the spot.
Damilola’s strike partner Dooake Sonrandein slotted the penalty right down the middle giving the 6ths an unexpected lead.
As the half wore on Damilola and Sonrandein’s partnership was causing a lot of problems for the 5ths defence. At the other end of the pitch Toby Fox skyed an easy chance yards from the goal line, before playmaker Zak Thomas stuck the ball under the keeper before being taken out by the goalkeeper, who was arguably let off lightly by the referee.
In the second half Fox squandered another chance for the 5ths that would have given them the lead that they desired. Not long after, 6ths midfield maestro John Dowse stuck a free kick in the top corner to put the underdogs back on the front foot.
A tackle and awkward landing saw 6ths defender Josh Edwards go off injured aftertaken off in what could have been an injury that was worse than it was.
The 6ths star player Sonrandein was able to grab himself a brace and double the lead for the underdogs with a lovely darting run down the wing before lobbing the keeper to find the back of the net.
Fox then failed again not long after to get the 5ths back in the game when he hit the post from the edge of the area. The 6ths day was not over yet when goalkeeper Mack Bristow fumbled the ball into his own net to give the 5ths a lifeline that they very much needed.
The 6ths were able to see out the rest of the game.
Sonrandein and Dowse stood out for the underdogs, while the 5ths will be disappointed after a number of possible chances were squandered.
