USW WOMEN’S 1st team captain Ffion Llewellyn credits her side’s “really great attitude” as the reason for their positive start to the BUCS season.
The midfielder helped steer the team to a 2-1 victory against Oxford University in the last 32 of the BUCS Trophy last time out.
They are currently second in the BUCS Western 1A. Llewellyn thinks the squad’s attitude has been a key factor in their encouraging start.
“I think it’s just hard work. Throughout the team we’ve got a really great attitude, sometimes we’re not playing our best football but we still seem to be going out and getting the results we need.
“Kas (Taylor) and Rhys (James) have got us right where they want us, and we’ve gelled a lot easier this year and I think we can only keep going and progressing.”
The team have only tasted defeat once so far in the league, away against Bournemouth, and they face the south coast side today knowing that a win will lift them to the top of the table.
The captain is confident in her side’s ability and is hopeful that it will be enough to secure a victory against the league leaders: “We need to win, we definitely need to win. I think we’re in such a better position now than what we were.
“Kas and Rhys have made us develop at training, and throughout the games you can see we’re getting better. We’re hoping to go into that game and get a good result.”
Llewelyn’s side had to show a lot of resilience in their win over Oxford, something which Llewellyn was quick to praise: “I think it was a great performance. We got the result, we dug deep, it was hard work.
“Going in at half time at 1-1, it could have gone either way coming out for the second half but I believe we went out with the right attitude and luckily we got the win.”
The same attitude will be required for the visit of Bournemouth to the USW Sport Park today, as Llewellyn and her team look to avenge the 5-4 defeat in the reverse fixture back in October.
