CARDIFF City Ladies midfielder Hannah Miles has spoken about how Wales Women are “pushing barriers” in football.
Jayne Ludlow’s Wales narrowly missed out on World Cup qualification, but their journey captured the heart of the nation.
Their last group game against England attracted about 5,000 spectators and sold out in 24 hours.
Miles spoke about how close the squad came, and just how big an impact it has had.
“I think our recent success in the World Cup campaign, I think we exceeded so many expectations,” said Miles.
“We probably surprised ourselves, so it was fantastic to get the results we did and compete against those higher ranked nations. “That’s what we want to do and keep building for the Euros.
“It’s massively inspired the nation, I think it’s got 15% more girls involved in football in Wales so it’s definitely pushing barriers.”
With their campaign inspiring a nation of women and girls to take up football, Miles reflected on her own time playing football at a young age.
“I mean I didn’t have any problems, I was always out in my primary school, every lunchtime, playing with the boys,” Miles continued.
“I wouldn’t be playing netball with the girls, I’d be off playing against all the local boys’ teams.
“I probably was the only girl back then, but I think that it’s developed so much now that so many girls want to get involved, there shouldn’t be any barriers.”
