USW Men’s 2nd side were awarded three points without having to kick a ball after Cardiff University 3rd could not field a team.
The walkover brought USW’s season to a close and they occupy top spot of Western Tier 3B with 21 points.
Cardiff Metropolitan 4th currently sit in second in the league with 16 points and still have three games to play. They need six points from their final three games to take the title.
There is nothing more USW can do now but hope Cardiff Met 4th fail to pick up points.
USW’s assistant coach, James McElvenney, is philosophical about the wait and proud of what his team has achieved this season.
“It was always going to be an uphill struggle from here after losing our last two games,” he said.
“The title may have gone away from us but all we can do is sit and wait and hope a miracle does happen. You never know in football, especially BUCS league.
“Overall looking back at the season, we can still be proud with what we’ve achieved. We have a squad that’s brand new with many freshers who will be here next season better than ever and have experience on their backs now. So, we’re excited to see where we can go.”
He also singled out a number of individuals for their contribution to football at USW and beyond.
“Looking at the bigger picture, we have achieved a lot this season with the likes of Aaron Tyner, Frederick Stevens, Andrew Martin have all gone to train with the 1st team and played.
“As well as that, Andrew and Frederick securing a place at Taffs Well in the Cymru South. They have a massive part to play in their relegation battle. That’s something we can be proud of, the development of players who deserve so much credit.”
The wait goes on for USW. Cardiff Met 4th defeated Bristol 4th 5-1 in their last game. Then they move onto their university derby with a game against Cardiff Met 3rd, which will be an intriguing match between the two university sides.
Then in their final two games they have to play bottom of the league Swansea University 3rd twice.
Cardiff Met 4th’s final game is on the 25th of March.
